Sunday 21st: Harmony Day; Week of Solidarity with the Peoples struggling against Racism and Racial discrimination begins
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. To find out more click here
The life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community in Australia is 12 years. On this day, we recognize that there is still much to be done to close this gap so that our Indigenous sisters and brothers are able to have the same opportunities and quality of life as all Australians.
